Cambios pequeños, impactos gigantes 

     Ir a hacer el súper… agotador no?, llevar todo por la tienda en un carrito, luego a la caja registradora, y finalmente a tu vehículo, sólo para que te lo den en una bolsa de plástico y que 3 de 5 se rompan en medio del estacionamiento. Y las otras 2 que sobrevivieron y llegaron sanas y salvas a casa, acaban en la basura después de acomodar la despensa. Todo esto parece inútil, así que ¿por qué molestarse? Aunque parezca una locura, hoy es el Día Internacional sin Bolsas de Plástico, y este día se utiliza para animar a los países a prohibir los plásticos de un solo uso en general, específicamente las bolsas. Sé que parece que hay un día para todo, pero este día nos parece que va realmente con nuestros valores y queríamos hacerlos partícipes de él. 

     Cinco trillones de bolsas al año, 160.000 por segundo… ese es el promedio de cuántas bolsas de plástico se usan, más bien, se desperdician. Son 12 minutos de uso por 1000 años de contaminación. Y como la mayoría de ellas acaban en el Océano, en 2050, los océanos podrían tener más bolsas que peces, medidos en peso. Sin mencionar, que los directamente afectados por esto, son las especies, que comen estas partículas y no pueden digerirlas. Las aves marinas, las tortugas, las focas, los leones marinos, las ballenas y los peces… todos comen plástico. Y en consecuencia, mueren por ello. Como la ballena encontrada en California que murió por los 22,2 kilos de plástico que había comido. La gente sugiere que se reciclen, pero la realidad es que menos del 10% se puede reciclar, es mucho más complicado de lo que parece. He aquí algunas ventajas de cambiar a una tote de algodón:

• Son más resistentes, por lo que aguantan más peso 
• Si se ensucian, solo falta meterlas en la lavadora 
• No ocupan espacio, después de cada uso se doblan y se meten en la cajuela del coche 
• No sólo sirven para ir de compras, sino que son un bonito accesorio para el día a día, como para pasear y tirar tus cosas en él, un día de playa, libros, etc. 
• Son biodegradables y tardarán de uno a cinco meses en descomponerse, y los minerales serán absorbidos de nuevo. 
• Si alguna vez se rompen, puedes seguir utilizándolos como trapos para la cocina, o para limpiar cualquier superficie. 
• Y son mucho más elegantes que una fea bolsa de plástico.

     Going grocery shopping…already sounds tiring, carrying everything around the store in a cart, then to the register, and finally to your vehicle, just for them to give it to you in a plastic bag and have 3 out of 5 break in the middle of the parking lot. And the other 2 that survived and made it safe home, end up in the trash after you restock your pantry. The whole thing sounds pointless so why bother? As crazy as it may sound today is International Plastic Bag Free Day, and this day is used to encourage countries to ban single-use plastics in general, bags emphasized. I know it looks like there’s a day for everything, but this day we feel like really goes with our values and we wanted to make you a part of it. 

     Five trillion bags a year, 160,000 a second…that’s the average of how many plastic bags are used, more like, wasted. That’s 12 minutes of use for 1000 years of pollution. And since most of these end up in the Ocean, by 2050, the oceans could have more bags than fish, measured by weight. Not to mention, the ones directly affected by this, are the species, who eat these particles and cannot digest them. Seabirds, turtles, seals, sea lions, whales, and fish…they all eat plastic. And consequently, they die from it. LIke the whale found in california who died from the 22.2 kilos of plastic it had eaten. People suggest recycling these, but the reality is that less than 10% of these can be recycled, it is far more complicated than it seems. Here are some benefits about switching to a cotton bag:

• They are stronger so they can hold more weight 
• If they get dirty, just throw them in the washing machine 
• They take up no space, after each use fold them back up and put them in the trunk of your car 
• Not only are they for shopping but they are a cute statement for everyday, like walking around and throwing your things in it, a beach day, books, etc. 
• They are biodegradable and will take one to five months to decompose, and the minerals will be absorbed again. 
• If they ever break, you can still use them as cloths for the kitchen, or to clean whichever surface. 
• And they are way more stylish than an ugly plastic bag.
