Aspartamo

Aspartame

Aspartame is one of the most famous non-nutritive sweeteners out there. We’ve discussed how labels try to fool us by claiming their products are sugar-free, or “diet”, but most of the cases, these have been sweetened with way worse things than you would imagine. There has been a lot of controversy around aspartame for the last years, and it’s time to finally settle it down. Let’s talk about it and its side-effects.

It is sold by the brands NutraSweet or Equal. It is used in most “light” products and it is an odourless white powder that is 200 times sweeter than sugar. It is composed of aspartic and phenylalanine (natural amino acids). When processed by your body, some of it is transformed into methanol, which is toxic in large amounts and in it could also be concerning in smaller amounts when combined with free methanols a substance that could be created when heating up aspartame. It is also known as a carcinogen and neurotoxin because it breaks into formaldehyde. Even though aspartame is an allowed ingredient by most countries regulations, organizations like the National Cancer institute, advise strongly on not ingesting it.

Next time you see a sugar-free product, check the ingredients and strive for sweeteners like monk fruit, allulose, stevia, or sugar alcohols. And even though these are healthier options, consuming them in moderation is always best. Eating whole foods instead of processed foods will always mean less harm to your body. Although having treats every once in a while is not bad.
