Grasas

Fats

Today we’re talking about fats. All types of them. And not the adjective. Honestly I think people run way when they hear this word but it’s because there’s very little information on them. And a lot of rumours too. There are 3 types, unsaturated, saturated, and trans. We’ll discuss each and the effects they have on our bodies. Because, we can’t always run away from all fats. So you better be informed next time you’re looking into buying a product.

Unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature and these are considered good because they improve blood cholesterol levels, ease inflammation, stabilize heart rhythm, and are usually found in plants, like vegetables oils, nuts, and seeds. There are two types of this, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated. The first ones are found in high quantities in avocados, olive, peanut and canola oils, nuts such as pecans or almonds, and seeds; pumpkin and sesame. The latter one is found in  sunflower, corn, soybean, and flaxseed oils, walnuts, flax seeds, and fish. Omega-3 is a type of polyunsaturated fat. Then, we have our saturated fats, the ones mostly found in animal foods. There’s a lot of controversia to whether these are good or bad, but as we always say, everything is in the middle. These don’t have any evidence that relates them to heart disease, BUT it could be beneficial if you switch them ONLY for polyunsaturated fats. So even if these aren’t as harmful as they’ve always thought to be, professionals still recommend to with for good fats. Trans fats are those that are made by heating up liquid vegetable oils. These oils are essential in the food industry for frying, baked goods, processed snacks, and margarine. These, increase the risks of getting heart disease and strokes, or diabetes. These ones are the ones we must stay away from.
