Fitonutrientes 

     Foto es la palabra griega que significa “planta”, así que, naturalmente, las frutas, las verduras y otros alimentos de origen vegetal (como los cereales integrales, los frutos secos, las judías y el té), tienen fitonutrientes. Y al igual que los alimentos vegetales tienen miles de sustancias químicas naturales, éstas no son esenciales para mantenerte vivo, pero pueden ayudar a prevenir enfermedades y a que todo funcione correctamente. Algunos de ellos son

  • Ácido elágico 
  • Flavonoides
  • Reveratrol
  • Glucosinolatos
  • Fitoestrógenos

     Los carotenoides son los responsables de dar color a los alimentos amarillos, naranjas y rojos. Son antioxidantes, el cuerpo también convierte algunos de ellos en vitamina A. Son buenos para la salud de los ojos. El ácido elágico se encuentra principalmente en las bayas, y puede proteger contra el cáncer y ralentizarlo. Los flavonoides se encuentran en el té verde, los cítricos, las manzanas, las coles, la cebolla, las uvas y el vino, y son antiinflamatorios, antioxidantes y reducen el riesgo de enfermedades cardíacas. Los glucosinolatos se encuentran en verduras como las coles de Bruselas, la col y el brócoli, y les dan su olor y sabor penetrante. Y por último, los fitoestrógenos, pueden tener efectos similares a los del estrógeno y están relacionados con un menor riesgo de cáncer de endometrio, y un menor riesgo de pérdida ósea en las mujeres. Una buena fuente de ellos son las semillas de lino y de sésamo.

Flavonoids is found in green tea, citrus, apples, kales, onion, grapes, wine, and it is an antiinflammatory, antioxidant, and it reduces risk of heart disease. Glucosinolates are found in vegetables like Brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, it gives them their sharp odor and flavour. And lastly, phytoestrogens, can have estrogen-like effects and they are linked to lower risk of endometrial cancer, and lower risk of bone loss in women. A good source of these are flax seeds and sesame seeds.
