Escapada
¿A quién no le gusta viajar? Puede ser un viaje de fin de semana o un par de semanas en el extranjero. De cualquier manera es muy divertido, probar comida nueva, vivir en una casa diferente por un tiempo, conocer gente, cambiar de ambiente y de entorno, salir, etc… Pues bien, tengo un viaje a finales de este mes y me entró el gusanillo de viajar, así que pensé que qué mejor que contarles sobre el lugar donde vivo, donde nació Kuxtal (la tienda física). Bienvenidos a Holbox. Una isla a 2 horas de Cancún, adicionalmente a 30 minutos de viaje en ferry desde Chiquilá, tal vez 20 si tienes ganas de rentar una lancha. Me mudé aquí hace casi un año con pocas o ninguna expectativa, y vaya que me sorprendió.
Holbox significa “agujero negro” en maya, así que no es de extrañar que sea un lugar lleno de misterios y sorpresas. Tiene mucha dualidad, puede ser muy fiestero, salvaje y loco. O también puede ser un encuentro tranquilo y relajante con la naturaleza. En cuanto a la comida, es difícil encontrar opciones que ayuden a nuestros hábitos o a nuestra rutina. Este es un factor al que uno se enfrenta cada vez que viaja, pero debido al tamaño de la isla y a las pocas opciones, es más intenso. De ahí nació el deseo de abrir Kuxtal aquí. No me malinterpretes, la comida de aquí es increíble, pero después de unas cuantas comidas siento que mi cuerpo empieza a fallar y realmente sólo quiero comida limpia y sana. Tratamos de crear un ambiente en el que te sientas en paz, con todo lo que estás consumiendo, desde nuestro patio y mesas al aire libre, nuestro concepto de tienda abierta para la gente que tal vez sólo quiere mirar alrededor, o simplemente hacer su compra semanal. En caso de que no sepas que tenemos una tienda física, está ubicada en el centro de Holbox, y cuenta con mucho verde, madera, iluminación natural y sombra, un mural en el frente, y actualmente estamos rediseñando para abrir un restaurante en la parte de atrás. Así que si quieres venir a Holbox esta es tu señal para hacerlo. Otra actividad en la isla, son los tours y créanme, hay un millón de estos, pero los 2 que creo que realmente valen la pena hacer serían el tour del tiburón ballena, o el de la isla. En el primero puedes nadar con tiburones ballena reales, grandes y enormes, lo que parece una locura, y es más loco en persona; y en el segundo te llevan a diferentes lugares alrededor de Holbox, como Yalahau, lugar del famoso manantial natural. Es un lugar precioso y el agua es perfecta siempre. En este tipo de tours, suelen pescar sobre la marcha y te dan un ceviche recién hecho, al momento. Personalmente no soy un fan del marisco, y está delicioso.
Deberíamos intentar conocer mejor la zona en la que vivimos, nos hace sentir mucho más conectados con nuestro entorno y nuestras raíces. Planear un divertido viaje de fin de semana a Holbox podría ser la relajación que has estado buscando. Yo llegué a esta isla con ganas de hacer dinero e irme, y sus hermosos atardeceres, playas y gente increíble, me atraparon. Getaway
Who doesn’t love travelling? It could be a weekend trip or do a couple weeks abroad. Either way it’s really fun, trying new food, living in a different house for some time, meeting people, changing your environment and surroundings, going out, etc… Well, I have a trip coming up at the end of this month and it’s gotten me in a travel mood, so I thought what better than to tell you about where I live, where Kuxtal was born (the physical store). Welcome to Holbox. An island 2 hours away from Cancún, additional 30 minutes of the ferry ride from Chiquilá, maybe 20 if you’re feeling a little extra to rent a boat. I moved here almost a year ago with little to no expectations, and boy has it amazed me.
Holbox means “black hole” in Mayan, so no wonder it is a place full of unknown things and surprises. It has a lot of duality to it, it can be very party-like, wild, and crazy. Or it can also be a quiet, relaxing encounter with nature. As for food, it’s hard to find options that support our habits or our routine. This is a factor you face every time you travel, but due to the islands’ size and few options, it is more intense. Which is where the desire to open Kuxtal here was born. Don’t get me wrong, the food here is amazing, but after a few meals I feel like my body starts to glitch and I really just want clean, healthy food. We try to create an environment in which you feel at peace, with everything you are consuming, from our outdoor patio and tables, our store concept open for people who maybe just want to look around, or simply do your weekly grocery shopping. In case you didn’t even know we had a physical store, it is located in the very center of Holbox, and it features lots of greens, wood, natural lighting and shade, a mural on the front, and we are actually redesigning to open up a restaurant in the back. So if you want to come to Holbox this is your sign to do it. Another activity on the island, are the tours and believe me, there’s a million of these, but the 2 that I think are really worth doing would be either the whale shark tour, or the island one. In the first one you get to swim with real, big, ginormous, whale sharks, which sounds crazy, and is actually crazier in person; and in the second one you’re taken to different spots around Holbox, like Yalahau, place of the famous natural spring. It is a beautiful spot and the water is perfect every time. In these types of tours, they usually fish as you go and you get a freshly made ceviche, right on the spot. I personally am not a fan of seafood, and wow this is good.
We should try getting to know the area where we live better, it makes us feel way more connected to our surroundings and roots. Planning a fun weekend trip to Holbox could be the relaxation you’ve been looking for. I came to this island with a desire to make money and leave, and its beautiful sunsets, beaches, and amazing people, trapped me.
