Indigenous’ Day

Today might be a normal day for you, but for others, it means a big deal. Today is indigenous day, and in Mexico, where 68 indigenous groups live, we would expect it to be a day to celebrate. But it is a day to remember their fight and struggle, that is still going on to this day. Each of these, have a special native language and form part of 21.5% part of the Mexican population (25.7 million people). These communities are still the most vulnerable out of all, when it comes to inequality, 69.5% of them live in extreme poverty and most of them perform poorly qualified manual labor.

Indigenous women, especially, are becoming more notorious all over the country, moving from marginated areas, to more developed cities. But they suffer even more challenges since they are: women, migrants, and indigenous. They usually get their incomes from domestic labor, informal trade, restaurants, maquila, or begging. I once read a quote that said, “everyday is indigenous day, if you’re living on stolen land”. And I’ve never agreed more. They are a huge part not only of our culture as Mexicans, but of the world. They safeguard 80% of the worlds’ biodiversity, hold ancestral knowledge, and they still lack formal recognition of their lands, territories, and resources. They are usually always last to receive basic services and infrastructure and face barriers to fully participate in the economy, access justice, or participate politically.

I believe they face enough challenges already, to put up with funny looks they get on the street, comments, or other forms of discrimination. They need to be recognized as the important part of the society they are. They need to be included on the climate change conversation, because they have the knowledge to fix it. Recognize them as the ancestral figures they are. Research the land you are living on. Support their art, the authors, and their small businesses. Find about the brands you consume. Learn to appreciate the difference in language, beliefs, and culture. We all belong in this world.
