Se calcula que de manera aproximada un individuo genera 90 toneladas de basura a lo largo de su vida. Si no tuviéramos algún sistema de reciclaje los desperdicios acumulados en el planeta serían de tal magnitud que las ciudades se convertirían en un gran vertedero.
La reutilización de los materiales es totalmente necesaria
La cuestión del reciclaje puede entenderse de muchas maneras. Para algunos es su pequeño granito de arena para no deteriorar más el medio ambiente. Otros reciclan con un enfoque estético o simplemente porque está de moda. En muchos centros educativos se promueve la reutilización de ciertos materiales para educar a los niños.

Tanto el vidrio, como el papel y los cartones, los textiles, los residuos orgánicos, el plástico y otros elementos son todos plausibles de reciclaje y re-uso. Obviamente, los procesos en cada caso variarán en términos de complejidad en cada caso, pudiendo incluso algunos materiales ser reciclados sólo un par de veces. De todos modos, la importancia del reciclaje reside en el hecho de que mientras más elementos u objetos sean reciclados, menos material será desechado y por lo tanto el planeta y el medio ambiente sufrirán menos el crecimiento permanente y desorganizado de la basura humana.
